Current Issues

Residential Development

The Waverton Precinct and residents acknowledge the housing crisis in New South Wales and the significant need for affordable housing in the state.

However, the Precinct believes that this should not be at the expense of open areas, parklands, public amenity and should be required to respect heritage and community.

Residents are closely following the developments that were announced in December 2023 to address the imbalance by focusing development close to transport hubs, jobs and existing infrastructure in a “transport orientated development program” that plans to provide up to 47,000 new homes over the next 15 years, and speed up the approval process.

The Precinct remains in close contact with North Sydney Council on these developments.

Berry Bay Park

Active discussions between the Council and Acciona/Transport for NSW are ongoing to develop the new Park at the end of Balls Head Rd. Following the masterplanning process, it is agreed the park will be largely open space with walking paths connecting from the existing end of Carradah Park along the waterfront to the beach area and to the Quarantine boat depot area.
It is likely there may be also be a new community hall and public toilet facility built around the current site of the old Woodleys Shed.
The Precinct is also involved in these ongoing talks.
The Park is likely to open in 2027.

Waverton Bowling Club

The site of the former Waverton Bowling Club is owned by the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council. There are currently no plans by the owners for this site, and no application to re-zone the site.

Residents, the Precinct Committee and North Sydney Council are watching this situation very closely.

Most residents have expressed a desire for the land to remain for recreational use.

Western Harbour Tunnel

This project is well underway with excavation of underground tunnels coming down from near Falcon St and also from the new freeway interchange near Rozelle, under Birchgrove. The new headers have arrived to excavate the tunnels under the harbour floor from roughly the ferry wharf is Birchgrove to roughly the end of the Coal Loader Park in Waverton as the next phase.
You can follow the progress of all this work via the Western Harbour Tunnel website.
